Where does the saying ''don't take any wooden nickels" originate?

some companies would produce wooden " nickles" for bonuses for regular customers. the nickles could only be redeemed with the company that made them but were useless as real money in other stores. when someone went somewhere they were often told " don't take any wooden nickles" in other words, take what you need for where you will be, don't load yourself up with useless junk.
