How long or when does a birch tree turn white?

I planted birch trees three years ago, and they're at least 14 ft tall; but the bark is still gray. I am told they'll turn white as they turn older, but how many years does it normally take? Currently they're about 2 inches in diameter. Would using lime or another additive help?
